Capitalism, Communism & the Domino Theory

Capitalism and Communism

These are both two types of ideology. Ideology is "A set of doctrines or beliefs that form the basis of a political, economic, or other system." (ronsmusings.com/definitons/ )

Communism is a dictatorship. People don't have freedom of speech, newspapers are controlled by the government and businesses are run by the government. There is one political party and people don't have freedom of vote. An example of a communist country would be Soviet Union

Capitalism is a democracy. People have freedom of speech, vote and there are several political parties. The government doesn't control businesses or newspapers. An example of a capitalist country would be America.

The Cold War

The cold war took place after WW2 between the USA (capitalist) and the USSR (communist). Cold War means that they didn't fight. The Soviet Union leader, Joseph Stalin, and American leader, Truman, didn't trust each other. The Soviet Army had a huge army, the Red army, and America had a powerful weapon, the A-bomb. So any fighting would have severe consequences. The cold war was caused by a number of things such as the Marshall Pact, The Birlin Blockade and Airlift also the Iron Curtain(Berlin Wall).

The Domino Theory

Vietnam was a communist country which is represented in the cartoon as a domino being pushed over but as it falls it pushes the others over too. This means that as Vietnam has turned communist the others will too but there is a soldier who is trying to stop that from happening. The dominos which are representing communist countries have fallen over giving the impression that communist countries don't work and collapse whereas the cappitalist countries are stood up giving the impression that they work.

collaborative essay

a.Neville Chamberlaine has been accused of being directly responsible for the 2nd World War. Would you agree that he is guilty of this?

        Plan

  •  Reasons he was to blame: appeasement
  • Reasons he wasn't to blame

Many people have thought that Neville Chamberlaine's idea of appeasement was the cause for WW2. Appeasement was when Britain and France gave Hitler countries in hope that he wouldn't take any other countries. The problem was Hitler kept demanding more and more countries but Britain never tried to stop him.

Neville Chamberlain was to blame for WW2 because he was to much of a coward to stand up to Hitler so he just gave into him rather than cause another war this gave Hitler more power as he thought he could do what he wanted also Neville Chamberlains idea of appeasement was to blame because this gave Hitler the chance to take advantage of other countries also he never took the appeasement seriously and Hitler knew that Neville Chamberlain wouldn't stop him from doing what he wanted as he would just tell him off and not take any actionit made Britain look like a joke and hardly any country took britain seriously after the appeasement especially Germany. Neville Chamberlain gave Hitler time to re-arm Germany and make the country more powerful again this is why the second world war broke out because Neville Chamberlain wasn't ready to take responsiblity and sort Germany out so he gave into Hitler.

Neville Chamberlain wasn't to blame for WW2 because he did the best he could at the time because he knew no one wanted another war because most countries were only just sorting themselves out after WW1. Also Neville Chamberlain like many people thought Hitler was a normal politician who was up giving in but they were all wrong about him also most people felt sorry for Germany after the way they had been treated in the treaty of versailles and Neville Chamberlain was giving Germany a second chance. Appeasement was a good idea because it mean't that problems could be solved without violence.

In my opinion i think Neville Chamberlain was mostly to blame for WW2 but he wasn't the only reason because although he gave Hitler time to re-arm because of the appeasement and he also gave Hitler time to become more powerful and make germany more powerful to but he wasn't just to blame because Hitler was a Facists so he would have caused a war no matter what Neville Chamberlain said or did to prevent war.

Some have said that the Nazi-Soviet Pact was the single most important reason for the start of the Second World War. Would you agree with this judgement? Explain your answer.

 Plan
  • Stalin leader of russia soviet union
  • Hitler leader of germany nazi party
  • Stalin was scared that hitler would invade russia
  • Also stalin thought that britain would leave russia to fight germany alone
  • no one trusted germany and stalin thought it would be the best way to solve problems
  • explain reasons why it wasnt to blame , other reasons to blame e.g.  appeasement
  • explain reasons why it was to blame
  • sum it up

The Nazi Soviet pact might have not been to blame for WW2 because  there were other causes for WW2. Neville Chamberlaines idea for Appeasement was thought to have caused WW2 because Britain and France allowed Hitler to take countries such as Czechoslovakia and never attempted to stop him. Britain and France were both scared of another war so they both wanted to try and keep Hitler happy but instead it lead to WW2. By giving Hitler these countries they were breaking terms of the Treaty of Versailles which said to Hitler he could keep demanding.  When Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia Britain and France realised Appeasement wasn't going to work.  Some views on Appeasment were Traditonal in 1990/50 e.g. Cato, they thought that it was a terrible idea. The revisionist in 1950's e.g. AJP Taylor, thought it was the only thing which could have been done. The Counter Revisionist in 1990's e.g. McDonough, thought that it was the only option but wasn't done well.

The Nazi-Soviet Pact may have been to blame for WW2 because Neville Chamberlain didn't trust Joseph Stalin and Stalin thought Britain wanted to trick Russia into another war with Germany, so neither of the leaders trusted each other. Also Poland didn't beleive that Russian troops would leave once there but Britain was unable to send troops into Poland so Russian troops would have to go and fight in Poland for Russia but Hitler promised Stalin peace and half of Poland. Stalin thought that after Appeasement Britain was weak as they always stepped back and didn't try to stop Hitler so he thought that Briain would leave Russia to fight Hitler on their own. Stalin could either join with either Britain and fight against Hitler or join Germany and  have time to re-arm giving them time to get ready for a war against Germany. Stalin joined with Hitler because it gave them time to build their army and he didn't trust Chamberlain. One problem with this was that Hitler knew if he got Russia to promise him peace Britain wouldn't be able to defend Poland and Hitler would be able to invade.  When Hitler did invade Poland Britain declared war on Germany on 3rd September.
I dont't think that the Nazi-soviet Pact was the only cause of WW2. I think that along with the Nazi-soviet Pact there were other vital causes such as Appeasement. Appeasement gave Hitler the idea he could get away with invading countries and the Nazi- Soviet Pact lead to him invading Czechoslovakia and Britain finally decided to do something about it.

How and why Hitler and the Nazi party came to power

Hitler first became the leader of the Nazi party in 1923. With inflation high he thought he would be best for Germany and be able to help. With the help of ex-soldiers he planned to invade Munich and stage a march in Berlin. Unfortunatly it wasn't planned properly and Hitler got nervous meaning it failed. He gave speeches and finally got persuaded to lead the march by Lundendorff but police fired and Hitler and the nazis ran off. Hitler was caught the next day and was given a 5 year prison sentence but he only served less then a year. He wrote up what happened in his book called Mein Kampf meaning my struggle.

In July 1932 the Nazi party was the biggest party in Reichstag but their votes dropped in November due to them wantint to share the vote. They wanted to share the vote so it wasn't obvious they wanted to win. The Reichstag was the German parliment building which was set on fire in 1933. This helped Hitler  because it happened just before the elction and communists were blamed for the fire. Communists want equal right but Hitler wanted a dictatorship. With communists being blamed people were more likley to vote for Hitler.

Nazi's beleived that only raccialy pure people were people who had blonde hair and blue eyes. Anyone who was racilay impure was to kicked out of the country. They beleived they needed more living space and that they get things back which they lost through the Treaty such as land that they gain during the first world war etc.

Hitler had alot of supporters, even other poloticians such as President Heidenberg who thought Hitler would do well because he could use his popularity to his advantage. He also told people in Germany what they wanted and what they needed to hear. He told them that Jews were to blame for their problems and the depresion. With Jews being used as a scapegoat he united people in Germany, had someone for them to blame and thought he could help. He also offered to give more money to farmers for items they sold to help with losses during the depresion. To offer more jobs to unemployed such as working on roads and stadiums and also to restore profits and small buisnesses in order to value savings and end the threat of communists. He also promised to tear up the Treaty of Versailles.

The Manchurian Crisis

After the war, Japan was seen as the most important power in Asia and with the deppresion the price of rice went up and exports of silk suffered. The south manchurian railway, which the Japanes controlled, was blown up and the Japanese accused the Chinese of blowing it up.After this the Japanese decided to invade Manuchuria in 1932. Almost a year after this the League suggested that the Japanese left Manchuria but following this they then left the League. They later asked Lord Lytton to gather information under the Comission of Inquiry.

The affect on the League from this was that it failed. It failed to stop Japan from invading Manchuria and then after Japan left the League other countries which had trading links with Japan, especially America but unfortunatly they were not part of the League which didnt't help. so the League had to decide on any laws on things that Japan exported and they didn't come to an answer, also Britain and France didn't want another war so in the end a desicion was never made and they never stopped Japan from invading Manchuria so the League had failed.
