Capitalism and Communism

These are both two types of ideology. Ideology is "A set of doctrines or beliefs that form the basis of a political, economic, or other system." (ronsmusings.com/definitons/ )

Communism is a dictatorship. People don't have freedom of speech, newspapers are controlled by the government and businesses are run by the government. There is one political party and people don't have freedom of vote. An example of a communist country would be Soviet Union

Capitalism is a democracy. People have freedom of speech, vote and there are several political parties. The government doesn't control businesses or newspapers. An example of a capitalist country would be America.

The Cold War

The cold war took place after WW2 between the USA (capitalist) and the USSR (communist). Cold War means that they didn't fight. The Soviet Union leader, Joseph Stalin, and American leader, Truman, didn't trust each other. The Soviet Army had a huge army, the Red army, and America had a powerful weapon, the A-bomb. So any fighting would have severe consequences. The cold war was caused by a number of things such as the Marshall Pact, The Birlin Blockade and Airlift also the Iron Curtain(Berlin Wall).

The Domino Theory

Vietnam was a communist country which is represented in the cartoon as a domino being pushed over but as it falls it pushes the others over too. This means that as Vietnam has turned communist the others will too but there is a soldier who is trying to stop that from happening. The dominos which are representing communist countries have fallen over giving the impression that communist countries don't work and collapse whereas the cappitalist countries are stood up giving the impression that they work.

a.Neville Chamberlaine has been accused of being directly responsible for the 2nd World War. Would you agree that he is guilty of this?

        Plan

  •  Reasons he was to blame: appeasement
  • Reasons he wasn't to blame

Many people have thought that Neville Chamberlaine's idea of appeasement was the cause for WW2. Appeasement was when Britain and France gave Hitler countries in hope that he wouldn't take any other countries. The problem was Hitler kept demanding more and more countries but Britain never tried to stop him.

Neville Chamberlain was to blame for WW2 because he was to much of a coward to stand up to Hitler so he just gave into him rather than cause another war this gave Hitler more power as he thought he could do what he wanted also Neville Chamberlains idea of appeasement was to blame because this gave Hitler the chance to take advantage of other countries also he never took the appeasement seriously and Hitler knew that Neville Chamberlain wouldn't stop him from doing what he wanted as he would just tell him off and not take any actionit made Britain look like a joke and hardly any country took britain seriously after the appeasement especially Germany. Neville Chamberlain gave Hitler time to re-arm Germany and make the country more powerful again this is why the second world war broke out because Neville Chamberlain wasn't ready to take responsiblity and sort Germany out so he gave into Hitler.

Neville Chamberlain wasn't to blame for WW2 because he did the best he could at the time because he knew no one wanted another war because most countries were only just sorting themselves out after WW1. Also Neville Chamberlain like many people thought Hitler was a normal politician who was up giving in but they were all wrong about him also most people felt sorry for Germany after the way they had been treated in the treaty of versailles and Neville Chamberlain was giving Germany a second chance. Appeasement was a good idea because it mean't that problems could be solved without violence.

In my opinion i think Neville Chamberlain was mostly to blame for WW2 but he wasn't the only reason because although he gave Hitler time to re-arm because of the appeasement and he also gave Hitler time to become more powerful and make germany more powerful to but he wasn't just to blame because Hitler was a Facists so he would have caused a war no matter what Neville Chamberlain said or did to prevent war.

Some have said that the Nazi-Soviet Pact was the single most important reason for the start of the Second World War. Would you agree with this judgement? Explain your answer.

 Plan
  • Stalin leader of russia soviet union
  • Hitler leader of germany nazi party
  • Stalin was scared that hitler would invade russia
  • Also stalin thought that britain would leave russia to fight germany alone
  • no one trusted germany and stalin thought it would be the best way to solve problems
  • explain reasons why it wasnt to blame , other reasons to blame e.g.  appeasement
  • explain reasons why it was to blame
  • sum it up

The Nazi Soviet pact might have not been to blame for WW2 because  there were other causes for WW2. Neville Chamberlaines idea for Appeasement was thought to have caused WW2 because Britain and France allowed Hitler to take countries such as Czechoslovakia and never attempted to stop him. Britain and France were both scared of another war so they both wanted to try and keep Hitler happy but instead it lead to WW2. By giving Hitler these countries they were breaking terms of the Treaty of Versailles which said to Hitler he could keep demanding.  When Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia Britain and France realised Appeasement wasn't going to work.  Some views on Appeasment were Traditonal in 1990/50 e.g. Cato, they thought that it was a terrible idea. The revisionist in 1950's e.g. AJP Taylor, thought it was the only thing which could have been done. The Counter Revisionist in 1990's e.g. McDonough, thought that it was the only option but wasn't done well.

The Nazi-Soviet Pact may have been to blame for WW2 because Neville Chamberlain didn't trust Joseph Stalin and Stalin thought Britain wanted to trick Russia into another war with Germany, so neither of the leaders trusted each other. Also Poland didn't beleive that Russian troops would leave once there but Britain was unable to send troops into Poland so Russian troops would have to go and fight in Poland for Russia but Hitler promised Stalin peace and half of Poland. Stalin thought that after Appeasement Britain was weak as they always stepped back and didn't try to stop Hitler so he thought that Briain would leave Russia to fight Hitler on their own. Stalin could either join with either Britain and fight against Hitler or join Germany and  have time to re-arm giving them time to get ready for a war against Germany. Stalin joined with Hitler because it gave them time to build their army and he didn't trust Chamberlain. One problem with this was that Hitler knew if he got Russia to promise him peace Britain wouldn't be able to defend Poland and Hitler would be able to invade.  When Hitler did invade Poland Britain declared war on Germany on 3rd September.
I dont't think that the Nazi-soviet Pact was the only cause of WW2. I think that along with the Nazi-soviet Pact there were other vital causes such as Appeasement. Appeasement gave Hitler the idea he could get away with invading countries and the Nazi- Soviet Pact lead to him invading Czechoslovakia and Britain finally decided to do something about it.

Sat, 28 Mar 2009 10:49:00 -0700 How and why Hitler and the Nazi party came to power http://louisat11.posterous.com/how-and-why-hitler-and-the-naz http://louisat11.posterous.com/how-and-why-hitler-and-the-naz

Hitler first became the leader of the Nazi party in 1923. With inflation high he thought he would be best for Germany and be able to help. With the help of ex-soldiers he planned to invade Munich and stage a march in Berlin. Unfortunatly it wasn't planned properly and Hitler got nervous meaning it failed. He gave speeches and finally got persuaded to lead the march by Lundendorff but police fired and Hitler and the nazis ran off. Hitler was caught the next day and was given a 5 year prison sentence but he only served less then a year. He wrote up what happened in his book called Mein Kampf meaning my struggle.

In July 1932 the Nazi party was the biggest party in Reichstag but their votes dropped in November due to them wantint to share the vote. They wanted to share the vote so it wasn't obvious they wanted to win. The Reichstag was the German parliment building which was set on fire in 1933. This helped Hitler  because it happened just before the elction and communists were blamed for the fire. Communists want equal right but Hitler wanted a dictatorship. With communists being blamed people were more likley to vote for Hitler.

Nazi's beleived that only raccialy pure people were people who had blonde hair and blue eyes. Anyone who was racilay impure was to kicked out of the country. They beleived they needed more living space and that they get things back which they lost through the Treaty such as land that they gain during the first world war etc.

Hitler had alot of supporters, even other poloticians such as President Heidenberg who thought Hitler would do well because he could use his popularity to his advantage. He also told people in Germany what they wanted and what they needed to hear. He told them that Jews were to blame for their problems and the depresion. With Jews being used as a scapegoat he united people in Germany, had someone for them to blame and thought he could help. He also offered to give more money to farmers for items they sold to help with losses during the depresion. To offer more jobs to unemployed such as working on roads and stadiums and also to restore profits and small buisnesses in order to value savings and end the threat of communists. He also promised to tear up the Treaty of Versailles.

Fri, 27 Feb 2009 08:56:00 -0800 The Manchurian Crisis http://louisat11.posterous.com/the-manturian-crisis http://louisat11.posterous.com/the-manturian-crisis

After the war, Japan was seen as the most important power in Asia and with the deppresion the price of rice went up and exports of silk suffered. The south manchurian railway, which the Japanes controlled, was blown up and the Japanese accused the Chinese of blowing it up.After this the Japanese decided to invade Manuchuria in 1932. Almost a year after this the League suggested that the Japanese left Manchuria but following this they then left the League. They later asked Lord Lytton to gather information under the Comission of Inquiry.

The affect on the League from this was that it failed. It failed to stop Japan from invading Manchuria and then after Japan left the League other countries which had trading links with Japan, especially America but unfortunatly they were not part of the League which didnt't help. so the League had to decide on any laws on things that Japan exported and they didn't come to an answer, also Britain and France didn't want another war so in the end a desicion was never made and they never stopped Japan from invading Manchuria so the League had failed.

This diagram means that because America was failing, all other countris will fail. As America is unable to sell anything which means that other countries that are importing are forced to put up taxes on things meaning that they are also suffering as people are unable to buy as much. Also America was unable to buy items from other coutries which meant that other countries were forced to out the price of items down so they were making as much and their country was suffering.

The downfall if the US affecte all countries apart from the Soviet Union and many nations became poor and many people became unemployed which caused tension and conflict between countries in the 1930's. As the League of Nations depended on peace it was badly affected by the ecenomis crisis. The failure if this also helped lead in to the second world war which was what the League of Nations was trying to prevent.

Sun, 01 Feb 2009 07:48:00 -0800 League of Nations http://louisat11.posterous.com/league-of-nations-12 http://louisat11.posterous.com/league-of-nations-12

During the Paris Peace Conference, the League of Nations was set up. The League of Nations was a international organization which was set up to help keep peace and settle any disputes. It was set up after some of the world leaders thought there was need for one.

The League of Nations was set up as one of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles after WW1 in 1919.

The League of Nations was to be held in Geneva, Switzerland as Switzerland was a neutral country as it didn't take part in the war. They also already had international organizations such as the Red Cross.

Some countries which took part in the League of Nations was Britain and America. Two countries which were not allowed to join were Germany in 1919 as they had been blamed for starting the war and Russia in 1917 as it had a comunist goverment.

The League of Nations had it's weaknesses and strong points. It helped:

  • The Aland Island in 1921
  • It helped prevent war between Greece and Bulgaria in 1925

Unfortunatly it didn't help prevent:

  • Italy capturing a small port, Fiume, after the Treaty of Versailles when they thought the 'Big Three' had broken promises to them in 1919.
  • War between Poland and Russia frim 1920-1921
  • Stopping France and Belguim from invading the Ruhr area in 1923 after Germay failed to pay an installment in their reperations
  • WW2

The League of Nations ended in 1939 near the start of WW2 as it didn't help to prevent it but soon became known as the United Nations.

United Nations

United Nations was signed on 26th June 1945 in order to replace the League of Nations. Differences between the two were things such as the security council which had 5 members who were Britain, US, France, The Soviet Union and China and also had 6 countries which were members for 2 years.

Fri, 12 Dec 2008 02:59:00 -0800 Treaty of Versailles-problems :) http://louisat11.posterous.com/treaty-of-versailles-problems-4 http://louisat11.posterous.com/treaty-of-versailles-problems-4

http://classtools.net/my/diamond991364treaty_of_versailles___problems.htm-  link is to a diamond 9 were i had to put problems from the Treaty of Versailles in order from most important to least important.

As the most important point i have chosen the 'big three' wanted different things from the paris peace conference because this would have been a big problem as it would have meant they couldn't have come to a decision as they all wanted different things. This problem also links with the 2nd most important as there was huge amounts of pressure on the leaders to make sure that for them to stay in power they pleased the poeple back in there countries.

For the least important point i have chosen Woodrow Wilson persuaded representatives from France and Britain to support the priciple of selfdetermination because by selfdetermination they would have been trying to get what they wanted into the Treaty but this would then have meant that non of the leaders would have been agreeing and nothing would have been decided.

Other points and the order which i ranked them are:

  • Public opinion back home in the countries of the 'Big 3' meant huge pressures on Clemenceau, Wilson and Lloyd George.
  • Britain soon  came to see the Treaty of Versailles as a mistake.
  • The 'respirations'Germany had to pay to the Allies (especially France) were extremally high at £6,600.
  • The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk that ended Russia's involvement in WWI meant huge areas of land were given to Germany.
  • The end of the Austro-Hungarian empire led to nationalist uprisings calling for independence across Eastern Europe.
  • The secret Treaty of London (1915) between the Allies and Italy was not upheld at the Paris Peace Conference.
  • The League of Nations, set up as a result of the Paris Peace Conference was not very influential or powerful.
  • Woodrow Wilson persuaded representatives from France and Britain to support the principle of self-determination.

Fri, 05 Dec 2008 09:09:00 -0800 The Treaty of Versailles http://louisat11.posterous.com/the-treaty-of-versailles-7 http://louisat11.posterous.com/the-treaty-of-versailles-7

The Treaty of Versailles was a peace agreement which was set up after the first world war in order to bring peace to Europe and stop future war, helping the countries which had been most affected by the war by compensating them and punishing the Germans as they were blamed for causing the war. The treaty was part of many treaties which were set up between 1919-25 some of these other treaties were:

  • The Treaty of Trinon was signed by Hungary in 1920
  • The Treaty of Saint Germain was signed by Austria in1919

The Treaty of Versailles was decided by the leaders from 23 main countries which had been affected most by the war but there were four main leaders. After a few days Vittorio Orlando ended up leaving. The other 3 were known as the 'Big three'. The four main leaders were:

David Lloyd George(Britain)                                                                                                                                                                    Lloyd George blamed the Germans for the war and wanted them to pay as they lost thousands of men due to  fighting. Some British views after the war were "kill the Kaiser" and "make Germany pay".

Geroges Clemenceau(France)                                                                                                                                                               As a lot of France was damaged during the war along with Britain they also blamed the Germans for the war and wanted them to pay, they thought  they should be brought to their knees. Georges Clemeceau was also known as the tiger.

Vittorio Orlando(Italy)                                                                                                                                                                              Vittorio Orlando ended up leaving after only a few days.

Woodrow Wilson(America)                                                                                                                                                                     Woodrow Wilson came up with 14 points which he thought would bring peace to Europe which were negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference. Some of these were:

  • No secret Treaties
  • The removal of economic barriers
  • Freedom of sees
  • German's to leave Belgium
  • A general association of nations to be formed to give guarantees of political independence to great and small states alike

Some of there 14 points weren't going to work stopping future wars  as Britain wouldn't agree to the freedom of sees as they are surrounded by sea, they were also a big navel country and Germany wouldn't give up land they had fought for. There is no one way they could know if any countries wee keeping any secret treaties.

As no one from Germany turned up to the peace conference they had no input as to what was decided making it biased. Germans reffered to the treaty as a diktat as they had no representation, no say, they were being told what to do.

A picture of the 4 main leaders.

The Paris Peace Conference began on the 12th January 1919 and took a few months to finally come to a decision over. On the 28th June they signed the Treaty of Versailles in the hall of mirrors in the Palace of Versailles but whilst it was been decided meetings were held throughout Paris. It was finally finished on 20th January 1920, taking about a year to agree on.
 Treaty of Versailles

The League of Nations

The League of Nations was an organization which was set up as part of the Treaty of Versailles. There goals were to stop and future wars, to settle and arguments between countries and to improve the quality for peoples lives globally. By the 28th September 1934 they had around 58 members.

Army                                                                                                                                                                                                            The German army was allowed to contain 100,000 men and were not allowed any planes or tanks.

Navy                                                                                                                                                                                                             The German navy were allowed 15,000 men6 battleships but no submarines.

Rhineland                                                                                                                                                                                                      The Rhineland (an area between France and Germany) was demilitarised, meaning they no longer had an army.

Reparations                                                                                                                                                                                              This meant that Germany had to pay back reparations which was decided to be £6.6 billion

Anschluss                                                                                                                                                                                               This meant that Germany was forbidden to unite with Austria.

Baltic States                                                                                                                                                                                                 This meant that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia were taken back from Germany and made new states.

-The Alsace-Lorraine was given back to France

-The Saar was given to France

-Malmedy, Eupen and Ruhr was given to Belgium

-North Schleswig was given to Denmark

-Saxony was given to Czechoslovakia

-East Prussia, West Prussia, Upper Silesia and Silesia  were used to create Poland

The people who signed the treaty were know as the  'November Criminals' this was because German people felt they had been stabbed in the back as non of the fighting had taken place in Germany so they were always told they were winning which meant it came as a shock when they heard they had lost. 'The November Criminal' thought they had come up with something which would manage to stop any future attacks from Germany but the Germans would be able to stop any communism from Russia. The people of Germany however felt like they were being punished for the government's mistakes as they believed it was the government who declared war and not them. Even thought they thought it would help stop future wars unfortunately it didn't help prevent World War 2.

Fri, 14 Nov 2008 02:27:00 -0800 Where I can get extra help for GCSE history http://louisat11.posterous.com/extra-help http://louisat11.posterous.com/extra-help

Extra help and guidance is available at the Schoolhistory.co.uk Student Forum. This is moderated by teachers and can be a useful place to go if Mr Belshaw is not available or I need a second opinion! I can find this website at: http://www.schoolhistory.co.uk/studentforum. Also, if I want to listen to History podcasts about the course to help me learn, these are avaiable at: http://www.mrallsophistory.com/revision.html.
